How it's made

Twelve processes. Nine materials. One roof.

Because every process happens in-house, a single job can be welded, printed, foiled, bound and fitted without leaving the building.

  1. HF welding

High-frequency welding seals soft PVC without a stitch: pockets, wallets, covers and bags.

  2. Silkscreening

Crisp spot colour on PVC, acrylic, wood and board.

  3. Foiling

Gold blocking and foiling, a Modart finish since 1960.

  4. Book binding

    Case-bound, limp-bound, wiro-bound and raised-band books.

  5. Case making

Rigid boards wrapped in bookcloth, PU, leather or paper.

  6. Die & laser cutting

Exact shapes and clean edges in paper, PVC, acrylic and wood.

  7. Digital print

Full colour on paper and plastic, short runs welcome.

  8. Sewing

Stitched leather, PU and fabric, finished by hand.

  9. Plastic bending

Heat-formed perspex for stands, trays and glorifiers.

  10. Blow moulding

Hollow plastic parts, made on site.

  11. Fabric preparation

Cut, pinked and backed swatches for the sampling trade.

  12. Fitting & attaching

Rings, screws, corners, magnets and LEDs, fitted by hand.

Our story

Dig a little deeper.

  1. Today

8 000 m², and the sun on the roof.

Solar panels cover a large part of the power we use, rainwater tanks a large part of our water, and most of our waste is recycled, because so much of what we work with can be.

  2. On the floor

A team that treats every job like its own.

Directors E. Wellens, A.M. Wellens and Y. Adhikarie run the business today. Costs come from a modern costing system, and quality and service remain the cornerstones the company rests on.

  3. 1970

The ground under our floor came from the sea.

We built our own factory in 1970. At the same time the city council was building its new town hall on the foreshore, on land made of sand and shells taken from the ocean bed. That sand and those shells were dumped here to level our ground, and they still lie beneath the factory floor.

  4. Before that

A riverbed, and plenty of snakes.

The plot we bought had been a big river bed. When the bulldozers started levelling it, many snakes were caught.

  5. 1960

    From leather to soft PVC.

Six years in, A.G. Wellens moved the factory from leather to soft PVC, and with it to high-frequency welding, silkscreening and gold blocking. Many more processes have joined since.

  6. 1954 · 1884

Built on a leather-goods family, in business since 1884.

A.G. Wellens came from a Dutch leather-goods family in business since 1884. In 1954 he started a leather goods factory in Cape Town. That factory is Modart.
